A Weird Habit
It is a retarded habit that I have had for a while now. I wonder if I am the only one who does it. There has to be others like me, right? It is like anytime I come home I subconsciously throw my house keys somewhere and forget the location…
When it is time to go back out all hell breaks loose as I go into a crazy panic in search of my house keys. Did I put them on top of the fridge? Under the bed? On the toilet floor? Inside of my wardrobe? I think you would literally choke by surprise if I named all the random places I have found my house keys.
It can be pretty stressful tearing your house upside down looking for them when you are on the verge of leaving the house. You planned your time to perfection to catch the 8:09 train. But every second you spend searching for the proverbial needle in the haystack puts an extra dent in your plans. When you have finally found them you can no longer catch the train you planned to get, and on top of that you feel slightly agitated and heated. You should have seen me demolishing my apartment this morning leaving no stone unturned. I am pretty sure if I took you guys back to my apartment today you would take one step in, turn to me and say something like:
You: “OMG Prometheus, your house has been ransacked by burglars, CALL THE POLICE!!!”
Lol. Sorry but that kind of cracked me up. The dude on my left just peered over. He is probably wondering why I am laughing to myself.
So, thoughts? Can anybody relate and feel my pain? Does anybody have any weird habits they would like to share ? I promise I won’t laugh. I mean I will try my best not to..

Used to play poker for part of my living. I hated to go home down, even though in the long run, I was always on the plus side.
Anyway, because I hated going home down a buy-in or two, I would stay at the casino until I was up or at least even. I mean, if you calculate the money I pulled in during these sessions vs. the amount of hours played (sometimes 24 or more straight), it was worse than minimum wage. Haha.
I also had a bad habit at these times, of canceling whatever plans I had made in order to at least break even. So, I promised myself not to hit up the casino if I had some important plans within a day or two. But, I usually ended up going. Yeah, I lost a good girlfriend over it.

I had that same problem for ages, the dropping of my keys in spots that would cause them to become invisible when I needed them.
I finally designated a place on a cork board (a special push pin stuck in the board) in my home office where the keys MUST always be put. I obsessed on my keys always being there. It was a spot in plain view, so it was obvious to me when they were not there. When I noticed them missing from their spot, I would look for them and put them there right away, even though I didn’t need them at that moment. That helped me to increase key location awareness in my mind.
Eventually, I even managed to start putting the keys where they belonged when I got home, because I had programmed myself to be obsessively “key aware”. I still goof up from time to time, but my life is much better now with probably 95% fewer mad panic searches for my keys.
I think the most important thing is to make sure your “spot” is in a place you see all the time. You can program yourself to be bothered when your keys are not there. I don’t think everyone has this problem. We may share the same mental defect.

I totally feel you on that one because I play poker aswell. I would be stuck 1-2 buyins and be like I wont leave till I am even. Unfortunatly I play bad when I am stuck. There have been days I got back to even, but there are days where I left down 6-10 buyins
Life tilt baby lol
@Savage Japan
I think getting something to put my keys in might be the answer to all my problems. I will take a trip down to my local Tokyuu Hands and see if I can find some sort of solution. I guess since I am always infront of my TV finding something that I can put on my TV stand is what I should aim for.
I guess we might really be cut from the same mental cloth

hahaha
don’t share your problem but I would suggest solving it by buying a a special key holding device that you always leave the key inside or hanging from when you get home. Train your self to leave it there and you will be fine

My first apartment was in Germany, and there when the door shuts on you there’s usually no way to open it from outside without a key.
This happened to me precisely once; after that I got into the habit of *always* holding the keys in my hand before going out - since then I don’t think I’ve ever seriously mislaid them on more than one or two occasions. I don’t really have a special place, but do always put them back in whatever pocket I currently keep them in.
On the other hand I didn’t usually carry a mobile phone on me until coming to Japan, so I have had days when I get a few minutes down the street and realise something’s missing…

Interesting hehe. I find that outside I am pretty careful. Infact outside I am pretty paranoid. Especially on the train. When people are standing too close to me I get paranoid and keep patting myself down making sure I have my four essentials on me:
Wallet
IPod
Keys
Phone
I guess it is because I am from London I always think I am going to get robbed by a pickpocket…

I feel you, sometimes I try and hide things to keep them safe then I forget where the safe place is. RE the keys, I think it is a man thing, you all do it, walk into a room and dash your keys…..

@Anjel
Haha I am too scared to even try and hide stuff anymore. The amount of mobile phone sim cards I have lost trying to keep them “safe”

Good post… I usually misplace my car keys, but never the house keys.
April 27th, 2009 at 10:33 am
@Nino
I dont understand, that means you keep them seperately… ? Why?
April 28th, 2009 at 4:50 pm
Yea, I do
Isn’t it a great idea?
