A Misspent Life

Movie and TV Show Review

As promised here is a quick review of my movie/ TV show activity for the past month. I am actively watching two TV series at present. 24 season 7 which is sick good. Season 6 was beyond awful, however they seem to have gotten their shit together and brought some classic hard 24. I download the HD version every Tuesday after work (it is Tuesday today yay!!!).

The other series I am watching is Greys anatomy. Greys is just an awesome show. The characters are all really cool, the story lines are deep, and all the drama and sub-plots are really interesting. The schedule for it has kind of gotten weird. It used to be available for DL on Thursdays but now it is like on the weekend or something.

Ok so series I started but never finished (over past few years).

Prison break

Season 1 is possibly some of the sickest TV I have seen in my life. It was genius, pure genius. Season 2 was a disgrace. They spent the whole season running around in circles only for the most ridiculous thing ever to happen at the end… I tried watching season 3 but the writers strike caused delays in the episodes and I just gave up.

House

Started off really good. Really interesting main character and good concept. But after a few seasons it just got dumb and repetitive. Same thing happens every single episode. Only so much I could really take of it.

Dexter

I got to the last season and kinda got bored of it. Apparently season 3 gets better so I might pick it back up later. Season 1 and 2 are sick. I got the guys at work addicted to it :P

Californification

Man season 1 was awesome. Dude is like the ultimate pimp. It had me dreaming of leaving everything behind and living the LA dream of just straight out pimping chicks. Unfortunately season 2 has gotten lame. Can’t really see any direction or anything. Pretty boring now…

Other things I started but stopped cause I thought were lame or boring include:

Heroes (everyone says it is good, it kinda sucked to me…)

The Unit

Few others I can’t think of.

Movies I have watched lately.

Taken

This movie is sick. Dudes daughter gets kidnapped and he goes on a mission to get her back. This is the best film I have seen recently. I cannot recommend it enough.

Quantum of Solace

Sick action. Was impressed with the action scenes and stunts. The non-stop action basically saved the film since it had 0 storyline… Nevertheless, still a fun watch.

Little Miss Sunshine

This film is gold. It’s a comedy. I probably haven’t laughed this hard over a film in months. Highly recommended.

Crank

This film is really good. It is non-stop action with some humor. Dude gets poisoned and need adrenaline to keep his heart going (hence the non-stop action). It has possibly the best sex scene I have ever seen in any movie ever (not in a dirty way). Highly recommended.

Slum dog Millionaire

Film is really good. A slum kid who wins, “Who wants to be a millionaire” explains how he knew every answer by taking us through the journey of his life. Highly recommended.

Doubt

Meh, I watched about one hour of it and turned it off cause it made me sleepy. The second half of the film might have gotten a lot better, but I can’t  really do slow films at night. Might have to give it a second chance since it got such good reviews.

Sideways

Was decent, but was super, duper overrated. No way in the world this film deserves an Oscar or 7.8 on IMDB….

So anybody agree or disagree with anything I wrote? Anybody got a good movie they have seen recently that they would like to recommend/share?

Don’t be shy :)

Oh yea, I would also like to brag that I once watched a whole season of 24 in one day without taking a break :)

Man, i agree with you on prison break so much. It actually got worse in season 3. I’ve since stopped watching it entirely out of principle.

Same goes for Heroes. I loved it at first but now I think it’s a pile of shit marginally better than prison break, but only because it’s a semi-decently handled take on super heroes. It’s just a big mess now though.

You’re on the money on House as well. Started out well but the whole formulaic structure of, ‘hmmm, this is tough’, ‘oh, i’ve got it’, ‘no, wait, that didn’t work, now the patient is worse’, ‘oh wait, the answer was staring us in the face all the time’, topped off with ‘wow, i really am a genius…but i still hate you all (or do I?)’ really got tired.

Dexter is amazing tho man, you should definitely check out season 3. I felt it dipped at times in season 2 (it just didn’t have the perfection that the first season captured) but the 3rd was wholly satisfying. Do watch.

Right, i’m giving you the big push now. Watch DEADWOOD. If you only watch one more tv series in your life it should be this. I can’t recommend it enough. Pure class. Ian McShane gives one of the all time best performances, film or tv (imho).

Am a week behind on 24 so might indulge in a double episode tonight :D

Nice to see we are mainly on the same page with the TV series. What is Deadwood about and how far has it gone?

Did you watch 24? Episode 18 was really good.

    Any thoughts on recent movies?

    Danjamin says:

Deadwood is ’set in the late 1800’s, revolving around the characters of Deadwood, South Dakota; a gold mining town of deep corruption and crime’. It’s basically a multi layered HBO drama of the quality you would expect, with amazing characters, no concpet of ‘good’ and ‘evil’, superb writing, acting and atmosphere. Plus it’s a fascinating insight into a past world, with prejudice towards Chinese, blacks and Native Americans apparent and where technology is beginning to find its feet. Like the wire if it was set 100 years ago. Except you can forget about Stringer Bell, Al Swearengen is the new don. It’s already long since finished and is only (a criminal) 3 series long with 12 episodes per series. I’m gonna be a very sad man when I finish it.

Only managed to fit episode 17 in, was good stuff.

Think I told you about these 2 films but they were the last really really good ones I watched:

    Tenten: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1098226/
    Zenzen daijoubu: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1241338/

Oh, and if you haven’t seen any of the samurai films by Yoji Yamada I can’t recommend them enough. He’s done an unofficial trilogy, 3 stories with no relation but each one about the struggles samurai face in day to day life, trying to maintain status while facing hardships. Amazing films, made in this order:
Tasogare Seibei (The Twilight Samurai): http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0351817/
Kakushi no ken Oni no Tsume (The Hidden Blade): http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0442286/
Bushi no Ichibun (Love and Honour): http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0483578/

Ok, I will give Deadwood a looksy this weekend.

I dont think I have ever watched (nor considered watching) a Japanese movie before. I watch hong kong stuff because at least you can expect some sick fighting. Not too sure what to expect from a japanese film…

Fast and Furious! Im quite the fanboy and really liked it. That aside.. I’ve been out the game with movies. Some classics though..

    Usual suspects? Sawshank Redemption?

Oh.. By the way! Liverpool played in a THRILLER of a game last night against chelsea in the champion league quarter final. They eventually lost 7-5 on aggregrate.

Not a fast and furious fan. Vin diesel might be the worse actor in the world lol.

Usual suspects is sick though. Defo one of the best films ever. The Keyser Soze flashback is the best flashback I have seen in my life. The end bit when everything falls together is sick.

Shawshannk is a classic. Beautiful film. I dont get people who think it is the best film ever made though…

And yeah my sis told me about the footy. Also every single person in the world had it as their facebook status..

    @Tornadoes28
Yeah I think so too. But I think for them to keep the show going they needed to evolve his character and change the structure of each episode.

    @Jamaipanese
Your missing out man. Let me know what you think when you see it!!

I guess we have similar tastes when it comes to series and movies. I love 24, have all the seasons. For me form 1-5 was getting better and better, 5 being the best so far. 6 sucked big time. But now 7 is for me also one of the best. I can’t wait for the next episode. Damn Tony Almeida! :)
Prison Break 1 season, probably one of the best seasons of all time. I liked season 2, but they should end it then. 3 and 4 suck big time, although I still watch them. I’m curious about how they will end this.
You forgot LOST. For me it’s one of the best series ever, beacuse it’s like 1 big story stretching over 6 seasons. It’s sometimes hard to follow, but it’s deep.
I also watched Heroes, the 1st season was good. Now I don’t watch anymore, it got bad reviews.
Californication 1 season was really one of the best stuff recently. It’s just amazing, unique and brutally honest. I have Season 2, but haven’t watched yet… For me, best stuff comes from America, let there be Bollywood or Korean wave or Japanese movie industry… nobody beats USA… (even if they make 1 good season and then try to sell us sh*t the next 5 seasons ^^)

  11. April 27th, 2009 at 10:36 am

    Prometheus says:

    @Nino
I have never attempted to watch lost. A lot of people told me about it but i never gave it a chance.

I started watching Gossip Girl. Seeing we both have the same taste I think you will like it. I will give lost a chance once I am free :P

I think HK films are good for the martial arts. Sick action. Apart from that USA is the best.

  12. April 28th, 2009 at 5:02 pm

    Nino says:

I saw some trailer for Gossip girl… looks very superficial. Does it have any depth? Well, LOST is very long and you can’t just miss a season if you don’t like it. But so far all seasons are good, maybe season 3 is a bit worse, but 4 and the current 5 are brilliant. So, don’t get discouraged. The true brilliance of LOST is coming out now. Can’t wait for this season’s finale. So, good luck with Lost. :)

    Prometheus says:

Gossip girl has some depth. A lot of messy storylines and stuff. A cool new show I started watching yesterday is called “Lie to Me”

    It is pretty interseting :P
