A Misspent Life

Happy Bday Me!!

Lol, a bit of a shock logging in to the blog to find out it was down. But have no fear, its up and running again!
Anyway was my birthday on the 7th of March. Celebrated by going out for some nice lunch with the Missus. Here is a quick write up.

So the venue for lunch was the Monnalisa, a small French restaurant in Ebisu that had 1 Michelin star.

My first qualm was with how small it was. The table was ridiculously small and our table was way too close to other people. It was to the extent that you heard everything that they said. While I understand that this is Japan and there is little space, you dont really wanna be worrying about knocking your drink over cause there is no space on the table when you are paying top dollar.

appetizer

So the first thing that came was the appetizer. It was some sort of jellied meat. I cant remember what it was. It was ok. The plate was cool,  those are actually real petals in between.

leek

Grilled of leek and crab terrine is what they called it. It was good. It was a cold dish with crab and leek on top of some sort of rice and tomato sauce. This gets the thumbs up.

soup

Meuniere of codfish and shellfish soup, fisher style. This was the dish of the day. It was a creamy sauce with white fish, mushrooms and broccoli. The creamy sauce was really good and the fish was soft and juicy.

main

Pate of“Basque”pork in parsley and winter vegetables, truffle sauce. This was the main course. It was ok.. But to be honest it tasted a bit too much like a hamburger to me… Still, it tasted ok for what it was.

menher

Ok so the missus arranged for them to bring me over a cake and music box that played happy birthday.  I blew out the candle and made a wish :P It was pretty cool, I was salivating when I saw the cake. But in the end was kind of a disappointment. They actually take a picture of you and print it out for you which was nice!

soup2

This was called strawberry soup for some reason. It was a strawberry with yogurt dessert. Tasted nice.

dessertDessert was really nice. However, you see that cake with the green top? That is all you get from the birthday cake… Infact it was 3 other peoples birthdays and they all got a cake with a candle they blew out. Those motherfuckers recycled the same cake for 4 people…. Pretty ridiculous to tell the truth…

After that we got some tea and a little snack and that was it.

The waiter who served us was a kinda pissing me off. When other people came in he would take them to their seat and say thank you for coming in the rain and basically kiss their ass, but didn’t extend the same courtesy for us…

So all in all it was decent. I have had better. I definitely won’t be going there again :D

Japanese lunch tour

Trucks

So due to the credit crunch a bunch of once viable lunch options that once existed are now gone (shut down), lowering the quality of food, or scamming you by giving you less food.

There was a pretty nice French place I used to go for lunch quite often. It was 1200 yen (13usd, 8gbp) and you would get a big plate with salad, soup, bread, quiche and some vegetables as a starter followed by another big plate with meat, vegetables, sauce and mash potato. Pretty filling, even for my standards.

One day they announced that they are closing down and not doing lunch anymore. It made me pretty sad because I enjoyed the food and it was reasonably priced.

However, one week later they re-open and now lunch is 1050 yen (11usd, 7gbp) and all you get is one plate with salad (taking half the plate) soup, some meat and some random piece. The amount of food you get now works out to literally half of what you were getting before but the price hardly changed. Those motherfuckers think they are smart …

We normally go to non-Japanese restaurants for lunch, but since we are out of options me and a colleague decided to go exploring for a week and try Japanese places only.

I am definitely going back to this place again :D

And in other news, I had an interview for a bank job last week. I passed the first interview with the developers proving that I am indeed capable enough of working for the company. Now I have to pass the interview with the two main managers this week.

I actually interviewed with this company 2 years ago. The developers loved me but I failed at the interview with the main manager. Hopefully history doesn’t repeat itself. Anybody got tips on how to kiss ass in interviews? I assume not doing it well enough is what got me rejected last time…
